MYTH 3

"Bigger cars are safer."

Truth

Big cars make the streets more dangerous for everyone outside the vehicle. Larger vehicles, like SUVs and trucks, increase the risk of fatal collisions with pedestrians and cyclists. They take much longer to stop and, due to their height, drivers can’t see pedestrians, especially children, even just a few feet in front of the car. Moreover, the higher bonnet of large vehicles means pedestrians are more likely to suffer life-threatening brain injuries when struck, rather than less severe leg injuries typical of smaller vehicles.

Proof

Studies show that pedestrians hit by larger vehicles are significantly more likely to be killed. SUVs and pickups are 2-3 times more likely to fatally injure pedestrians than smaller cars. The higher driving position means poor visibility, particularly for children, while the raised bonnet height leads to more severe head injuries when pedestrians are hit, often causing fatal brain trauma. 2, 3, 4.

StreetSmart

StreetSmart envisions streets designed for people, not oversized vehicles. We advocate for reclaiming space, reducing danger, and creating safer, more liveable urban environments.
